Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Canolbarth Ceredigion 1921 We are pleased to announce that after 101 years, the 1921 Eisteddfod Chair has returned home to Aberaeron. It's not so much the lost chair of 1921, but its whereabouts until now has certainly been a mystery and a great topic of conversation over the years.
The winner of the Chair - the main Bardic prize at the Central Ceredigion Eisteddfod held at Aberaeron in 1921, was the Reverend T Cenech Davies. Originally from Llangennech, he served as minister of Cilcennin and Dihewyd independent chapels during this period. His prize winning subject was an epic to the late Sir Owen Morgan Edwards, the famous Welsh historian, educationalist and writer, and along with a prize of £2 2s, Mr W Rees from Kent donated this chair worth £8 as, 'a prize worth winning'. Within a few months of his success at the Aberaeron Eisteddfod, the Reverend Davies left the area for pastures new taking his precious Bardic chair with him.
So with over a century having passed, Aberaeron Town is obviously delighted beyond words to have this wonderful chair back in its place of origin, and donated to the Aberaeron Town Improvements Committee, through the wonderful generosity of Cheryl and Rob Watkins, relatives of the Reverend T Cenech Davies. This chair will now take pride of place in future town carnivals as the Queen's throne. So on behalf of Aberaeron Town, thank you Mr and Mrs Watkins for your very kind gesture in donating this extremely important historical chair back to our town. As a significant artefact of our town's history it is very much appreciated, means a great deal to us and rest assured it will be treasured by the Town Improvements Committee and housed in the Aberaeron Memorial Hall for future generations to come.
